Prince William & Kate's Last Name: Mountbatten-Windsor

Now that Prince William and Kate Middleton are married, some are wondering their last name.


Like other descendants of Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip, William's surname is Mountbatten-Windsor, and it will be Kate's too by marriage.


As explained by the official British royal website, the Queen's descendants carry the name Mountbatten, as well as the royal surname Windsor, to reflect her husband Prince Philip's surname.


The royal website explains further that the surnames are not always used, only when they are formally needed, such as the case of marriage.


While Prince William will be recorded as a Mountbatten-Windsor in the marriage registry today, he may choose a new name at a later point, specifically if and when he becomes king. As explained here, "Since a royal proclamation is not binding on succeeding rulers, King William could decide to add a name or two."


Prince William and Kate, who will go by the name of Catherine, also inherited the titles Duke and Duchess of Cambridge upon their marriage today.

Sign of the day

An apology has been made, and a sign with a vulgar word perched on a rooftop is gone. Alex White said he wasn’t going to take down a large orange sign he affixed to his chimney that read, “To the Nieghbor (sic) who called the police on Easter: F*@K yourself!” until he received an apology from his neighbour for calling police after hearing White and his wife arguing.

White says he has now received a short signed-and-dated apology letter from his neighbour. He said he would like the neighbour to know “there are no hard feelings and hope we can become friends.” White was so angry with his neighbour for ruining his Easter morning with the call to police, he decided to send a clear and colourful message back with the sign. “I only meant it to stay for an hour,” White said earlier. “I just wanted that one rude person to know how rude I could be back for disrupting our religious holiday.”

The sign stood on his roof until 10:50 p.m. on Thursday when he took it down, 10 minutes after receiving the apology letter. During an interview earlier in the day, White said, “It’s what everybody wants to say to that one neighbour who sticks their nose in other people’s business where it doesn’t belong.” White said he and his wife were having a loud discussion about their son’s bad behaviour. White’s wife said she didn’t care for police being called either. “I am a bit irritated, yes. Because, what, nobody argues? Please, nobody gets loud?” she said.

A teacher who stripped off his clothes and walked naked around a Georgia elementary school gave police a New Age explanation for his behaviour, claiming that he had achieved a “new level of enlightenment” and “wanted everybody to be free now that his third eye was open." For allowing others to see his third eye last Friday afternoon at the B.C. Haynie Elementary School, Harlan Porter was charged with public indecency.

The 31-year-old educator, pictured in the mug shot at right, was booked into the Clayton County Jail on the misdemeanor charge and released after posting $2000 bond. Since Porter’s April 22 stroll, which came at about 3:20 PM, was not witnessed by any students, who had been dismissed, he avoided more serious charges. After Porter told a Morrow Police Department officer about his enlightenment, the cop reported that, “I then explained the obvious problem with his third eye being opened in public.”

While acknowledging that his education career would be damaged by the bust, Porter said that he still desired to teach, except “on a new level, with hands in the earth, gathering the essence and learning how to love one another and fully appreciate the spiritual realm.” Police reported that Porter had “several books in his belongings that appeared to be on topics such as spirituality and transcendental meditation.”

8 year old boy sells gun to classmate for $3

An 8-year-old boy brought a loaded 9-mm handgun to his Queens elementary school today and sold it to a fellow third-grader for $3, cops said.

The cut-rate arms deal went down at PS 107 on 45th Avenue in Flushing.

After the boy who bought the weapon went home and showed it to his mother, she angrily returned to the school and told an official.

The administrator called 911, and cops identified the student who sold the gun, which had its serial number scratched off, sources said.

The seller’s 54-year-old father, Ignacio Galvan, admitted that he bought the gun, a Taurus semiautomatic, a decade ago for protection, law-enforcement sources told The Post.

He was charged with criminal possession of a weapon and endangering the welfare of a child.

His son faces charges as a juvenile, cops said.

The young buyer thought the weapon was a toy, according to the sources.

What is going on with the school system. Don't they teach kids some basics on the value of things today? Like what it costs to buy car, rent an apartment, buy a gun? Surely the kid knows how to use Google. A quick Internet search would tell you that the going rate for a Taurus 9mm is about $300. Even a used one is worth $100. I'm so bummed out by the school system.

Latest federal seat projections - 3 days to go

It appears Stephen Harper may have outsmarted himself when it comes to election strategy. His plan was to concentrate on 10 or so seats to push him into majority territory. Also part of his strategy was to attack Michael Ignatieff (“he didn’t come back for you”). Finally he tried scare tactics where if the Conservatives did not win a majority then the opposition would attempt a “Parliamentary coup” and Canada would be run by separatists and socialists.

He did not have a true national campaign, it was really divide and conquer. There was little debate on policy other than a few wedge issue directed at the Conservative core. The only positive was taking credit for stewardship of the economy during a difficult time. For which the Conservatives deserve credit.

But the narrow and cautious approach might ultimately cost them their majority. Sure attacking Ignatieff worked. But voters considered the alternatives and decided it wasn’t just Harper or Ignatieff or Duceppe (for those in Quebec). There was also smiling Jack Layton who seemed to be getting a free ride. Targeting vulnerable opposition ridings was actually effective but in the past week the Conservatives have begun to lose seats to the NDP in BC and Quebec. Where initially the NDP popularity was splitting the left vote and benefiting the Conservatives, now everyone is losing seats to the NDP.

In Toronto, the NDP is likely to double their seats to four. There will likely be two new NDP members from BC, two from the Prairies and two more from the Maritime. But it is in Quebec where the NDP is expected to make the biggest gains. They are leading in 34 which would work out to a net increase of 32.

What worries me is that we will see a very weak crop of new MP in Parliament. When the Ontario NDP under Bob Rae swept into power in 1990, they went from 19 seats in the Legislature to 74. Many candidates who loyally agree to have their names on the ballot as sacrificial lambs without any expectation of winning woke up the day after the election in a role that were just qualified for. That is what will happen after May 2. While voters think they are electing Jack Layton, in reality only the voters in the Toronto-Danforth riding are voting for Layton. The rest of the country is voting for the local NDP candidate, warts and all. Afterall this isn't a Presidential election.
