Rick Mercer challenges Canadian youth to vote

One of the reasons contributing to higher voter turnout at advanced polls and the sudden shift in popularity for the NDP may have to do with younger voters becoming engaged. Perhaps instrumental has been political satirist Rick Mercer. Mercer points out that youth issues are ignored by politicians because they don't vote. There is some validity to his observations. Senior issues are a major focus for politicians not because they are concerned about seniors but because they vote in large numbers.

At university campuses across Canada students have been responding to Mercer's challenge. It will be interesting to see what impact this will have on May 2. Looking back in history, when young voters became involved in the 1960's the world turned upside down.
