From the perspective of an outsider the spectacle around the Obama birth certificate is laughable. You get the impression that no proof will convince his opponents who are a mix of conspiracy believers, conservatives and racists. The birthers will never except any proof because challenging his right to govern reinforces their views.
The bottom line is challenging Obama's birth place in effect delegitimizes his entire presidency. It also sets the stage for the next presidential campaign by characterizing the President as a liar and a cheat.
The highest profile birther Donald Trump quickly claimed a victory and moved on to challenge the President on his academic record. Though Trump is on shaky ground here because the previous president, George Bush admitted to being an average student at best.
It's pretty pathetic with the problems that confront the U.S. that any attention would be given to this very pedestrian issue.
